SubGro Subsoil Amelioration
The business SubGro has been established to service the growing demand for subsoil amelioration.
Which places nutrient rich compost and amendments such as lime and gypsum into the hostile subsoil found below many agricultural areas within Victoria. Research has shown that sub soil compost application deepens the root zone and provides crops with better access to water and nutrients.
SUBGRO is now operating a soil core drilling unit and sub soil application machine, deep ripping Camperdown Compost into the sub soil.
Starting with soil testing to establish the soil condition at depth, an assessment can then made of whether sub soil compost application will help crops. If the sub soil would benefit, a formula blend of compost, gypsum or lime is mixed and applied to the sub soil.
This is putting nutrients and active biology deeper into the soil and holding open the physical channel with the compost blend applied at depth.
The results are significant where the soil structure has been limited, allowing deeper penetration by roots and boosting yields in dry or sub optimal seasons.

2024/25 Trial Site Update
The season for subsoiling runs from late December after crops are harvested, through to the autumn break and new crops being planted in April.
During the 2024/25 season, SUBGRO has established a series of ten trial sites in the South-West Victoria high rainfall cropping zone from Camperdown in the south to Beaufort in the north.
These trial sites will be evaluated throughout the year for yield and soil carbon and moisture levels. Field days will be run later in the season at these sites.
