About Camperdown Compost Company

The Camperdown Compost Company is a state of the art force aerated compost facility providing organic waste processing services to business and municipal programs and making high nutrient, biologically active compost for local agriculture.

Founded in 1998 by Tony Evans and Nick Routson

The Camperdown Compost Company set out to make high quality, high analysis composts for local agricultural enterprise long before the circular economy and regenerative agriculture were emerging as directions for the future.

With many dairy processors in the district producing valuable liquid organic wastes that were going to waste, Camperdown Compost provided a new recycling option to recover and use the nutrients for return to the soil.

Unusually, compared to other composters, The Camperdown Compost Company received much of its feedstocks as liquids, composting them with sawdust or wood chips as bulking agents before changing to more nutrient rich garden organics based bulking agents as Councils introduced garden organics collection services.

As the company grew, Tony and Nick needed better ways to handle the liquids, which led to them searching the world for the best compost system for liquid treatment. Compost Systems of Austria had experience worldwide and drew bespoke plans for Camperdown Compost’s Bookaar site upgrade.

Camperdown Compost’s $7 million upgrade brings the latest compost processing technology to the region.

Featuring a 7,000 sq m aerated floor and further maturation area the upgraded site will reduce environmental impacts like odour, increase capacity and produce high quality, high nutrient compost.

The compost is mechanically turned while sitting on the aerated floor ensuring even consistency and thorough mixing of feedstocks.

The computer controlled system gently aerates the compost, maintains an even temperature constantly logged by thermometer probes which creates optimal conditions for the aerobic biology that breaks down the organic matter to create the compost.
Liquids are added through the process to maintain the ideal moisture level for composting while evaporating off the surplus waste waters.

Our compost is made with a base feedstock of garden organics

Solid commercial food wastes and nutrient rich waste sludges from abattoirs and dairy processors to which waste liquid is added on the aerated floor.

Windrows are formed over the aeration channel and the air pumped through the floor boosts the aerobic thermophilic bacteria, quickly raising temperature of the windrows and accelerates convection of hot air through the windrows.

This accelerated process, evaporates the liquids quickly while leaving the nutrients in the compost and rapidly breaks down the solids into a fine, nutrient rich compost.

The heat generated through the process kills harmful plant pathogens and diseases as well as seeds and plant propagules to ensure a compost that is safe for users and the environment.

Our compost meets the Australian Standard 4454 and EPA Victoria’s requirements to pasteurise the whole mass of the product and measure pathogens, seeds and plant propagule destruction.

The result is awesome compost.
